Thaddeus Edmund “Ted” Tomczak, 79, of Bassett, peacefully passed away August 10, 2016 at the Palliative Care Center of Roanoke Carilion Hospital. He was born in Buffalo, NY October 12, 1936 to Clara Konowalska Tomczak and Frank Tomczak, both deceased.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Pankovich Tomczak of the home; his sister, Theresa Tomczak of Fairbanks, Alaska; his children, Jacqueline Casey of Manassas, VA; Zak Wanek of Moorefield, WV; Vernon Tomczak of Augusta, WV; Lydia Williams of Sterling, VA; Jill Carhart of Centreville, MD; and Jeffrey Peaper of Chadds Ford, PA; twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Ted lived in Cincinnati, OH and Sterling, VA before retiring to Bassett in 2000. He was a career chemist with the U.S. Government having been educated at Canisius High School and Canisius College, Buffalo, NY, and Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

Upon his retirement, Ted was presented the Distinguished Career Service Award for technical knowledge and leadership in the development of regulations, standards, policy and guidance on environmental protection and worker safety. His 38 year career included the Department of Energy, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Food and Drug Administration.

Ted volunteered at the Virginia Museum of Natural History and the Contact organization as a board member and crisis hotline worker. He had been president of the Smith River Chapter of Trout Unlimited and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Workers, the Knights of Columbus, Sterling Chapter, and a member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church.

The family is being served by Roselawn Funeral Home and services will be private.
